Gekkeikan is one of oldest sake brewers in Japan. The main office in Japan is in Fushimi (Kyoto). They also have a brewery in Califorina producing a number of sake products.
For many years the only sakes available were the domestic brands: Sho Chiku Bai, Shirayuki, and Gekkeikan. At some point we noticed the Gold showing up on the shelves. (In PA we have a state-run liqour monopoly that did not provide much choice for many years, thankfully this has change in that last 5 years).
This was pretty much our house sake for about 20 years. It is the kind of sake you like to go to on a cold day and you want something to warm the spirit. Combined with a good Japanese dinner and sushi it brought moments of bliss.
The Gold is a junmai and has very nice qualities both warm (120º F) and chilled to about 50º F.
While over the last few years I have been lucky enough to try some amazing sakes, this is still the sake I come home to.
